Also written or known as Freemen, Freeman and Freedom of the city

A list of people given the "freedom" of a town, the right to trade and practise a craft there.

Freedom came through apprenticeship, birth or payment. The Register of the Freemen of the City of York, which begins in 1272, is a rich source of trade surnames.
