Feet of Fines

Court copies of agreements settling disputes over land, kept from 1195 to 1834.

Each agreement, or "fine", was written out three times on one sheet and cut apart. The bottom copy, the "foot", was kept by the court, so the Feet of Fines record many landholders' names.
