Pipe Rolls

The yearly accounts of the royal Exchequer, among the earliest English records of names.

The Pipe Rolls record money owed to and paid to the Crown, county by county. The parchment sheets were sewn together and rolled, said to resemble a pipe. The earliest surviving roll dates from 1130, and the series runs almost unbroken from 1155.
