Domesday Book

The great survey of England ordered by William the Conqueror and completed in 1086.

Domesday records who held land across most of England, and what it was worth, before and after the Conquest. It lists thousands of personal names, but few hereditary surnames had formed by then, so it is mainly a source for the names and places that surnames grew from.
