Subsidy Rolls

Also written or known as Lay Subsidy Rolls

Lists of people who paid taxes, or "subsidies", granted to the Crown.

Lay subsidies were taxes on movable goods, collected from the 13th to the 17th century. The rolls of 1296, 1327 and 1332 list taxpayers village by village and are among the best sources for early surnames.
