The name usually translated as 'Angle-glorious', is first recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 in the Latinized form 'Engelbricus'. One Engelbricht de (of) Stanlega appears in the 1176 Pipe Rolls of Somerset. The surname from this source is recorded in the early 13th century (see below). The name was very popular in France during the Middle Ages as a result of it having been borne by a son-in-law of Charlemange. On January 31st, 1795, one Daniel Engelbrecht married an Ann Davies in St. George's church, Hanover Square, Westminster and on February 10th 1824, the marriage of Elizabeth Engelbrecht and William Archer is recorded in St. James, Paddington.
