This unusual surname is of origin, and is a name from a now "lost" place in the of Mottram, Cheshire, recorded in the 13th Century as "Mottresheved", from the genitive case of the pre 7th Century "Motere" meaning speaker, plus the "heved", a development of the Olde English "heafod", head (land), hill. This place is one of the estimated seven to ten thousand villages and hamlets that have now disappeared from the maps in Britain. The prime cause of these "disappearances" was the enforced "clearing" and dispersal of the former inhabitants to make way for sheep pastures at the height of the wool trade in the 14th Century. Natural causes such as the Black Death of 1348 also contributed to the lost village phenomenon. The surname dates back to the early 14th Century (see below), and early recordings include John Mottershead, of Mottram (1415) in the Wills Register of Chester.
