Kinds of surname
Byname
A descriptive second name, such as "John the smith", used before surnames were inherited.
Bynames told people with the same personal name apart: by their father (William's son), their home (at the brook), their job (the cook) or a nickname (the red). When a byname stopped changing and passed to a person's children, it became a surname.
