This interesting name has definitely undergone some changes in the past three hundred years. It originally derives from the Old Dutch heraldic names "Uiteurmarsch" which translates as "one who dwells by the Marshy ground" and first recorded in England as "Utermarck" on October 19th 1780. On this date, Peter Rodolph Utermarck and his wife Elizabeth witnessed the christening of their son, George William, at the Church of St. Helen's, Bishopgate, London. Sometime in the 1840's, the spelling seems to have split and the spelling then appears both as Undermark and Undermare as shown below. Charles Augustus Undermark also being a christening witness at St. Anne's Church, Soho, Westminster, on August 25th 1844. The original nameholders were probably of Huguenot associations, but this is not proven. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Thomas Barnfield Uttermare, which was dated August 18th 1859, married Elizabeth Terry, at "St. Pancras, Old Church, London", during the reign of Queen Victoria, known as "The Great White Queen", 1837 - 1901. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
