The surname from this source is first recorded in the latter half of the 13th century. Alternate spellings have included Kelehoog (1369). One John Ryche alias Kelhoge, appears in the 1541 Fine Court Rolls of Essex. In 1651 a Joseph Kellogg emigrated from Great Leighs, Essex to Connecticut. One of his descendants, William Kellogg (1830-1918) became governor of Louisiana. In the modern idiom the name has two spelling variations: Kellogg and Kellog.
