This unusual and interesting surname is of early origin, and is a name from one of the estimated seven to ten thousand villages and hamlets that have now disappeared from the maps of Britain. Enforced "clearing" and disposal of former inhabitants to make way for sheep pastures in the 14th Century, at the height of the wool trade, was a prime cause of these "disappearances", along with natural causes such as the Black Death of 1348. The component elements of the place-name Tigwell are believed to be derived from the pre 7th Century "Teag" meaning "enclosure" plus "well(a)" "spring" or "stream" hence "enclosure by the stream or well". Church records show that the original place is thought to have been in Hampshire.
