It is however ultimately derived from the pre 7th century Old Norse given name "Logmathr", composed of the elements "log", meaning law, with "mathr", the genitive form of mann, meaning man. The name therefore could have been job descriptive and to have described a lawyer, or perhaps was given at baptism in the pious hope that the child would become a lawyer! The surname as Lawman or Lagman is also found in the districts of England where there were Scandinavian settlements, especially in Cumbria and Lancashire.
