This unusual name has many variant spellings, so much so it is not easy to decide the original spelling. The early recordings are as Noaden (1597) and Nodding (1573), and the name is believad to originate form the French personal name "Nadine" meaning "hope". If this is so, the name is a late medieval introduction and this may be so, "Nodier" being the probable French form of the name and well recorded Heraldically. The name development has included Noden recorded in 1676 and Nodin in 1720, when John Nodin married Eleanor Osborn at St.Martine in the Field, London. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Thomas Noaden. which was dated 1597, Baptised as St. Margaret Pattens, London. during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, Good Queen Bess, 1558 - 1603. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
