Recorded as Van Son, Van Zon, Van der Son, Van der Zon, (The Netherlands), and Vanderson, Vandisson, Vandusson, Vandissen, (England), and probably others, this is a locational surname of Dutch origins. It originates from a place called Zon in the province of North Brabant, and has been recorded in England since at least the time of King Charles 1st (1625 - 1649). It maybe that the surname in England was originally associated with the draining of the fen lands of Cambridgeshire, Huntingdon, Lincolnshire, Bedfordshire and parts of Norfolk, as this work was supervised by Dutch engineers who had already had several centuries of experience in this type of work in their home country. Furthermore this surname predates the arrival of William of Orange, William 111rd of England, (1689 - 1702) who brought with him large numbers of advisors who may account for later name recordings. The name recordings in England include examples such as Judith Vanderson who married John Spencer at St Botolphs Bishopgate, on July 5th 1629 and Joseph Vandussen at St Andrews Holborn, more than a century later on October 2nd 1759. In the Netherlands recordings are generally later than in England. Examples from these include Anna Maria Van Zon at Amsterdam on October 31st 1725, Antonia Van Son at Waspik, Brabant, on October 8th 1729, and Cornelius Van der Son at Veenandall, Utrecht, on January 15th 1736.
