This interesting name is of Polish origin, and has two possible interpretations, both derived from the vocabulary word "sek", knot, knar, rugged rock or stone or a knot in wood, especially a protuberance covered with bark on the trunk or root of on tree. The surname from this source may be either a topographical name for someone who lived by a tree with a knotty, knarred trunk, or such a rock, or it may derive from a nickname for someone thought to be either powerful and unyielding or stubborn and awkward, from a transferred sense of the vocabulary word. The name Seczyk or Seczek is the diminutive form of the name "Sek", and can also be found as Sekowskie and Seczkowski. The equivalent names in Czechoslovakian are Suk and Soucek. Among the recordings of the name in Poland is that of the christening of Maryanna Sek at Koscielna Wies, Bydgoskiego, on September 8th 1841. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Jedrzei Sekowski (baptism), which was dated 1814, Klubka, Bydgoskiego, Poland, during the reign of King Alexander of Russian, 1801 - 1825. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax.
