Another possible origin is as a short form of the relatively popular surname Hebblethwaite. This occurs perhaps not surprisingly, in a wide range of spellings. Hebblethwaite is from a village much further north, on the borders of North Yorkshire and Cumbria. The word "hebble" is apparently Norse or Danish -Viking and means "plank bridge" with Hebblethwaite being the plank bridge by the meadow. Locational surnames are usually "from" names.
