Recorded in many spellings including Ebs, Ebbe, Ebbs, Ebben, Eborn, Eburn, Eburne, Epp, Epps, Eppson, Epperson, Ebbot, Ibb, Ibbs, Ibbot, Ibbetson, Ibbotson, Iben, Ibben, and others, this is an English surname. However spelt it is said to originate from the either the female personal name Isabella, or the masculine personal name Eggebrecht or Egbert. Isabella is a variant of Elizabeth, which in its original hebrew form meant "my god is my oath", whilst Egbert was pre 7th century pagan Anglo-Saxon and composed of the elements "agi" meaning the point of a sword and "berht", bright or famous. At first glance this transposition is not easy to comprehend but it occured over a long eriod of history. Space does not permit more than a random selection of recordings but these include Adam Ebboth of Somerset in the Subsidy Tax rolls of the year 1327, Robert Ebbys in the hearth Tax rolls of the county of Suffolk in 1524, Alicia Ebbins who married Robert Cashby at All Hallows church, London Wall, city of London, on April 25th 1661, and Benjamin Eburne at St James church, Dukes Place, westminster, on November 26tgh 1682. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Alica Ebbe. This was was dated 1296, in the Subsidy Tax Rolls of the county of Sussex during the reign of King Edward 1st of England and known to history as "The Hammer of the Scots", 1272 - 1307. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
