This apparently English name is almost certainly of French-Flemish descent, the original spelling having been dialectually transposed over the centuries. On first appearance the name is locational except that there is no place recorded with any similar spelling. It is our opinion that the origin is the Lorraine-Flemish, Bressel or Brassin, through Braselline to Brazelon, as recorded in 1813 (Eleanor Brazelon being baptised at St. Andrews, Holborn, in that year) and then to Brazelton c. 1850. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Tipson Braselline. which was dated 1621 St. Mildred Poultney, London. during the reign of King James I of England and VI of Scotland 1603-1625. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
